“I can’t find skilled employees to work in my business.”
That’s a common refrain lately. No wonder: The unemployment rate has dipped to levels we haven’t seen since 2000. Businesses can’t find enough workers. What’s an owner to do?
First, look inside your own company. Turn up your radar and look for folks who come in every day with a smile and energy. Ask them, “If you could do anything in our company, what would you want to do?” Their answers might surprise you! If you help create a career path for employees — by mentoring them and assisting them as they build new skills and craft new goals — they’re more likely to stick around.
When you interview a new candidate ask, “What have you taught yourself to do? How did you learn to do it?” A candidate may have learned to play guitar from YouTube. Voila! You now know what she loves and how she learns.
Remember: technical skills, procedures and processes can be taught — look for visible passion.
